14 new records established at 50th Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior School Athletic Championship
An impressive 14 new records were established at the 50th Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior School Athletic Championship, which concluded recently. St Joseph’s College, Colombo won the prized Best Junior School Championship – Boys and Musaeus College, Colombo emerging the winner of the Best Junior School Championship – Girls.
Held from 28th to 30th November at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, this edition of the Athletic Championship was conducted under four age groups for both boys’ and girls’ (Under-12, Under-13, Under-14 and Under-15) with 14 new meet records established. This year’s Championship attracted the highest number ever for such a meet with 19,000 athletes from 800 schools participating.
M. Kaushan from De Mazenod College, Kandana was awarded the Best Athlete – Boys for his feat in the Under 15 Boys Long Jump clearing 6.49m. Seneka Gunarathna of Colombo International School, Kandy was adjudged the Best Athlete – Girls for her performance in the Under 15 Girls 200m of 25.7 seconds. She also established a new record clocking 59.5 seconds to win the Under-15 Girls 400 metres.
Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo was the Championship Runners-up – Girls while Our Lady of Victories Convent, Moratuwa was placed third. The Runners-up in the Boys’ events was Lyceum International School, Wattala and D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo finished third.
The Championship was sponsored by the premier chocolate brand of Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL), Ritzbury, Sri Lanka’s No. 1 chocolate, for the 9th consecutive year. Ritzbury has earned a sterling reputation continuously contributing meaningfully to building future athletic stars.
In addition to harnessing talented youth through the sponsorship of the John Tarbat Championships, Ritzbury has also extended its support to towards other sports such as the Junior National Squash Championship, the Junior Tennis Tournament, the Super 16 Junior Rugby Carnival and the Inter-School Swimming Championship.
