A Race for the Stars, A Race to make a Difference
A five kilometre charity fun run/walk “Race for the Stars” is set to take place on Sunday, June 28, 2015, from 6.30 a.m. onwards at Independence Square. The event is organised for a worthy cause: The Tiny Stars Pre-School and Day Care centre for low income families living in the Dehiwala / Mount Lavinia area. This fundraiser hopes to attract the participation of over 1,000 runners / walkers.
Tiny Stars was started to help address the problem that older children were unable to attend school because they had to take care of younger siblings at home while their parents worked. The pre-school prepares children for government school which, whilst nominally free, presents huge financial and practical challenges for these low income families.
A day care facility after school is also offered so that mothers can go to work and improve the family circumstances. 75 children currently attend the programme.
Further, all proceeds from “Race for the Stars” will go towards a purpose-built building, which is in the process of being constructed to re-house the school. However construction has been halted several times due to lack of funds. A total of Rs. 10-12 million is required to complete this building.
The current, rented building has a leaky roof, which leads to flooding, as well as crumbling wall and ceiling plaster. Because the building is rented, there is also a constant drain on the school’s already limited funds to pay the rent.
This pre-school and day care centre is run by the Community Concern charity, which has served the local community for over 15 years and has affiliations with the Global Care international charity. Once the building is complete, Community Concern plans to introduce even more after school programmes, allowing additional opportunities for these children to excel in life.
So come and join Race for the Stars on June 28th, tickets available from Coffee Bean, Revival and AOD.
