80 schools register for Kandy district leg of Tokyo Cement Super Quiz Season 3
The Tokyo Cement Super Quiz is growing increasingly successful year by year, with the Kandy district leg alone attracting around 80 registered schools in 2016, compared to 60 previously, which is due to the fact that it continually improves to cater the needs of students, according to Central Province Education Department Assistant Counsellor K.R. Illangasinghe.
Additionally, It was noted that 2016’s Tokyo Cement Super Quiz Season 3, which is televised by Swarnavahini, and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, also took great pains to continue to maintain its highly intense, competitive environment, which was vital in motivating, and holding the interest of, new and returning Super Quiz participants, also aiding in its ongoing success.
All these positives have also contributed to the Super Quiz rapidly becoming an important rite of passage for Sri Lankan students, for their journey into adulthood, because of the maturity and experience provided by participating in a competition like this, as well as naturally orienting these youth towards developing better communication skills, being more mindful of civics and society and igniting a thirst to seek knowledge.
Highlighting the national importance of the Tokyo Cement Super Quiz, Mr. Illangasinghe also commented that, thanks to this far reaching quiz-based learning initiative, there is now hope that the pursuit of general knowledge will be inculcated to an even greater degree amongst Sri Lanka’s youth, ultimately creating more awareness, and better preparedness, about the bigger world in which we all live. This is especially important given that we are tuning in less and less to watch news and current affairs programmes. Also, importantly, the aim of the Super Quiz falls in line with the larger goal of the Ministry of Education to, one day, add “General Knowledge” as a subject in the national schools curricula.
These observations were made at the recently concluded Kandy district leg of the all-island Tokyo Cement Super Quiz Season 3, where Super Quiz district host Pushpadana Balika Vidyalaya, along with Dharmaraja College and Mahamaya Girls’ College, beat out immense competition to make it to the final, Colombo rounds. To be televised soon on Swarnavahini, the final rounds in Colombo feature a highly competitive group of 32 finalist teams vying for more than Rs. 5 million worth of prize money, as well as exciting gifts. In fact, winners and runners-up of the previous season were gifted with laptops and tablet computers.
Tokyo Cement, Sri Lanka’s leading manufacturer of cement and concrete, initiated the Super Quiz in 2013 to further the pursuit of knowledge and competitiveness at the secondary educational level, overseen by the Ministry of Education. Tokyo Cement is a longtime proponent of Sri Lanka’s nation building initiatives, having recognised the need to lay a strong foundation in the field of education, to prepare the country’s workforce for tomorrow.
Now in its third season, the Tokyo Cement Super Quiz offers up over Rs. 5 million annually in cash prizes alone, in addition to much, much more spent in promoting educational activities island-wide, which in turn fosters excellence across local educational and academic institutions. A truly massive corporate social responsibility initiative, last year’s quiz saw 632 schools competing at the preliminary level, with the televised quiz programme itself also having won numerous, prestigious local awards.
