Over 150 graduate from Australia’s Swinburne University-Nawaloka College
It was an evening of celebrating great achievement as one of Australia’s most highly recognised seats of higher education, Swinburne University of Technology which is in partnership with the Nawaloka College of Higher Studies conferred degrees in Engineering, IT and Business on 150 graduates who are now form the elite alumni of Swinburne University. Ninety graduates were conferred with Diplomas, while sixty students also successfully completed the Foundation Year in Science & Engineering and Business. Swinburne University and NCHS awarded scholarships to the best performing students in recognition of high achievement in the highly competitive arena of global academics, which today has become extremely competitive internationally.
Having mooted the campus just two years ago, Chairman of NCHS Jayantha Dharmadasa mentioned that the event itself is momentous given that it coincides with the second year anniversary of NCHS. “Our ethos from the beginning has been to support the government’s efforts and vision to make Sri Lanka an international hub of excellence in higher education and today’s graduation conferring that cap and gown of graduateship on 90 young people, reiterates that fact that we have been an active contributor to spurring an education system that will grow economic growth through a strong knowledge base.”
While congratulating the cohort of graduates, Chief Guest Vice Chancellor of Swinburne University Linda Kristjanson reflected that each graduate had fulfilled the requirements of a demanding course of study with focus and discipline. “Swinburne is committed to being a nationally and an internationally recognised institution in science, technology, design, business and innovation, where our education programs and our research are relevant to the world community. We are dedicated to this goal because increasingly, our graduates are required to work globally and establish successful international careers and our researchers routinely collaborate with scholars from around the world.”
Keynote Speaker Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy reflected similar thoughts on his own personal educational experience adding, how a foreign education will positively enhance a student’s life. Dr. Coomaraswamy stated, “NCHS serves to reduce the impact on a family’s budget…this is thanks to the Nawaloka Group”. Moreover Dr Coomaraswamy emphasized that ‘’the quality of our education will be a key determiner of this country’s future’’ and appealed to the graduates to return to Sri Lanka and work towards building of the nation.
Both the Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Bryce Hutchesson and Dean of Studies of NCHS Dr Alan Robertson congratulated the graduates, with the High Commissioner mentioning that the graduation celebrates their commitment to continuous learning. “You have demonstrated ability and readiness to acquire the knowledge and skills that will enhance your career prospects and prepare you for new challenges.” Says Robertson: “This ceremony recognises the success of our major goal, to develop students with the knowledge and skills to progress towards new levels in their education and career pathway.”
