Huawei seizes second place in Global Smartphone Market in Q2 According to IDC
Huawei, one of the fastest growing smartphone brands in the world today has seized second position in the global smartphone market with a total share of 15.8% in the second quarter of 2018 according IDC.
In Sri Lanka, Huawei has emerged as a much sought after smartphone brand and the tech giant has been continuously introducing many firsts and innovative technology into their devices in enhancing Sri Lankan consumers’ experience.
Huawei has been hailed as an innovative smartphone brand that heavily invests into research and development (R&D), where over 10% of revenue is invested in R&D every year. According to Huawei’s 2017 annual report, there were about 80,000 staff members who worked for R&D, or almost 45% of the total number of employees. According to the 2017 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard report from the European Commission, Huawei ranked No. 6 among global tech giants in 2017 when it came to R&D investments alone.
Huawei has so far shipped over 100million units of smartphones by July 2018, and is set to reach 200million units before the end of 2018. Huawei has also built expertise hubs during these years which includes the algorithm center in Moscow, UX design center in San Francisco and design center in London, aesthetic center in Paris, and 5G technology development center in Germany.

We have continued to build multiple channels in order to gain feedback from our consumers and to improve and bring innovations for better experiences,” Country Head Huawei Device Sri Lanka, Peter Liu said. He further added “Sri Lanka is an important market for Huawei, and we will continue to invest more to grow and make available the best products and to pursue top positions by increasing the communication, and bringing our best phones to the Sri Lankan consumers”.
In order to introduce the best technology and Industrial Design, Huawei has built long-term partnerships with world-class partners to set unmatched benchmarks in the industry. Further to develop the best smartphone camera, Huawei has worked with Leica on the optical and image technologies since 2016. In the first half year, its flagship product P20 Pro with the world’s first triple camera takes the highest score of the mobile review from world’s most authoritative image quality company DxO Mark. Huawei also partnered with luxury brand Porsche Design on Mate series Porsche Design edition, which helps to gain great feedback from the ultra-high-end market.
In Sri Lanka, Huawei has succeeded in securing the number one position in smartphone sales according to recent GfK reports (Growth from Knowledge).
