APPÉ LANKA Brings Safe Drinking Water to Over 4,000 Children in Poonakary
Transforming lives for the better in the North and East of Sri Lanka, APPÉ LANKA project has gifted access to clean drinking water to over 4,000 school-going children. The project was initiated in April 2018 under the theme ‘Let Them Bloom – Give Them Water’, to grant safe drinking water. A year-and-a-half later, 21 schools in the GN Division of Poonakary – Killinochi District in the Northern Province, have safe water every single day, all the time, thanks to the far-reaching impact of APPÉ LANKA.
Commenting on the successful completion of the first phase of the project, Founder and CEO of APPÉ LANKA, Shaan Corea says: “It gives us great joy to see the massive impact that easy access to safe drinking water has on school-going children, as it has a direct effect on their overall health and in keeping them healthy and energetic to attend school and realize their potential. In the past, these children and their families relied on bowsers to deliver water, which was a scare resource. They had no access to safe drinking water. The purpose of the project was to give the people what you and I take for granted – usable water. Today, in the communities that this project has impacted in Poonakary, more children go to school, are less thirsty, play sports like children in other parts of Sri Lanka, and are happier, healthier once again – simply because they have access to usable water every day, all the time. We look forward to replicating this successful project in more schools in other districts as well as villages in Poonakary in due course.
APPÉ LANKA is also achieving milestones in the area of delivering better connectivity, providing sustainable livelihoods and promoting renewable energy amongst these marginalized communities. The project also teaches core subjects to students and fosters peace and reconciliation through the use of sports and arts.
APPÉ LANKA financed this project through several fundraising events such as “OHE for Poonakary”, an evening of poetry and song ; “KOLUU for APPE LANKA”, a culinary feast prepared by Chef Koluu ; “MANIUMPATHY for APPE LANKA”, an auction night at the Boutique Hotel on Kynsey Road, Colombo ; CHOSEN GENERATION – a concert at Barefoot Garden Cafe, featuring Y5, Colombo, Unscripted, and Peacemakers ; as well as generous contributions from individual donors/organisations. Round Table 5, Rotary Club Colombo, Rotary Club – Regency, Thomian Ride, Spa Ceylon And ICCB have also contributed to the APPÉ LANKA project.
