The Sri Lanka Sub Aqua Club turns 30 @ Trinco!
To celebrate its 30th anniversary the Sri Lanka Sub Aqua Club (SLSAC), organized the largest dive event in Sri Lanka on the 12th and 13th of September 2015 in conjunction with Nilaveli Beach Hotel and the Sri Lanka Navy. More than 30 SLSAC members dived the Trincomalee Pigeon Island area and also joined the Sri Lanka Navy divers in exploring two sites at the Trincomalee Harbor – the Admiralty Floating Dock 26 and the wreaks of two decommissioned Gun Boats and a tugboat. The club then conducted outreach activities among school children in the Gopaluram School, Nilaveli, on the importance of conserving Sri Lanka’s precious coral reef system. The event was organized by Nilaveli Beach Hotel and sponsored by Daintee Group of Companies.
The Sri Lanka Sub Aqua Club which was founded in 1985,is currently the only active scuba diving club in Sri Lanka and is registered with the NGO Council. It was established with the primary purpose of training scientists in SCUBA diving so as to better equip them to undertake marine biological research. However the club expanded to include the training of recreational divers, with its members diving regularly all around the island and contributing to knowledge creation on Sri Lanka’s reefs, ship-wrecks and marine environment based on their own observations. The club also serves as one of the foremost lobby groups for the protection of Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems and currently also provides the government with advice on issues pertaining to underwater research, conservation and diving as a sport.
The club organises events (including lectures, guest presentations and social activities) for it members on the last Tuesday of every month and also offers special discounts at a wide variety of dive centres, dive equipment centres, hotels and restaurants.
