The first agarwood harvesting of sadaharitha shows promise
Sadaharitha Plantations, Sri Lanka’s leading commercial forestry company and reputed for its sustainable management of plantations conducted a trial harvesting yesterday in their research space at the Panthiya Estate in Mathugama.
With international demand for Agarwood increasing, rampant felling and illegal harvesting of these trees are taking place despite, none or very low (1-5 %) formation of Agarwood found in these trees. As a local endemic plant, ‘Walla Patta’ grows in wet and intermediate zones in Sri Lanka and is currently one of the mostly smuggled items from this country to international markets.
Sadaharitha Plantations through a decade of research and investment understands the commercial and economically viable nature of Agarwood harvesting. The successful commercial production of Agarwood was guaranteed in Sri Lanka through the CA-Kit (Cultivation Kits). The patent for this technology in Sri Lanka is held exclusively by Sadaharitha Plantations. The trees of ‘Aquilaria Crassna’ sold and distributed by Sadaharitha Plantations yields up to 60-70% in agarwood within after the CA-Kit Treatment, and this was confirmed on site at the estate yesterday afternoon.
According to Sadaharitha Plantations, research data has confirmed that though Agarwood in Walla Patta forms naturally, it does not distribute along the entire stem of the plant resulting in low formation of natural Agarwood. “As we saw today the CA-Kit Treatment has succeeded in getting the formation of agarwood in these trees to a very good level and we’re continuing the research to study on how to improve it and form different types of Agarwood within these trees” said Dr. UpulSubhasinghe the Lead Consultant for Sadaharitha Plantations.
Chairman of sadaharitha Plantations Mr Sathis Nawarathne said “As a responsible plantations company in the forefront of commercial forestry, Sadaharitha is mindful of the need to promote a green economy and will continue to play a central role in sustainable Agarwood harvesting. Our CA-Kit has shown promising results to all here today of its capability and this is a strength to all our investors and us. We will continue to work with our specialists to study on how to improve this even more in future.
“Another important fact that needs to be noted is that, with the Commercialization of the Agarwood as an investment product through Sadaharitha, the company is also contributing towards the foreign income generation and local economic development by generating more job opportunities from various ventures of agarwood in various plantations and locations. We to become one of the biggest foreign income generators in the country and today we have seen strengthening fact for that.” Said Mr. Jayamapathy Mirando – Director at sadaharitha plantations.
Most importantly for the investors the safety of their investments made through sadaharitha is backed and guaranteed by the forward selling agreements the company has for its various products with one of the world’s giants in supply of Sandalwood, Wescorp Australia. The guaranteed safety of the return on investment is a key factor for any investor and this is a key strength of the company that has kept the company growing consistently over the past decade and to continue growing as the most trusted name in Sri Lanka for Green / Agro Investments.
