Tokyo Cement Super Quiz Season 3 kicks off from Galle
Sri Lanka’s biggest competition for school going youth, the Tokyo Cement Super Quiz 2015, kicked off for the third consecutive year from the home base of the previous year’s grand winners, Richmond College Galle.
This heralds the dawn of a new round of opportunities for Sri Lanka’s young intellectuals to win fame and cash rewards for their alma mater. At last year’s gripping finale in March 2015, telecast island wide on Swarnavahini the official media partner of the Quiz, Richmond College Galle toppled the reigning champion Royal College Colombo, for a stunning victory. Watching the tense battle, the nation united in applauding this well deserved victory as four young men walked off with a cheque for Rs. 1 mn for their school and congratulated the first runner up Royal College for a game well played.
The Tokyo Cement Super Quiz has been a resounding success at enhancing knowledge of school children throughout the island. The current 3rd successful round of the Quiz, gives school children the opportunity to participate in the competition with the right spirit, and to develop their skills as well rounded future leaders. As the games begin again, the country awaits with bated breath to see which school will emerge the victor. Kicking off this process from Richmond College Galle, quiz teams from 29 schools went head-to-head in a decisive battle to enter the first round of the competition. The contest in Galle was followed by another batch of 24 schools that entered the fray through an intense round of competitions from Matara. Ultimately there can only be one team standing.

The Tokyo Cement Super Quiz is endorsed by the Ministry of Education and is also viewed positively by independent educationalists. All questions posed at the Quiz are designed for young people and are aimed at fuelling the desire for knowledge. The Tokyo Cement Super Quiz has already been recognised and lauded for its televised edutainment format that contributes directly towards youth education. The competition has been recognised as the best educational quiz program and was presented two prestigious awards for the previous season.
Tokyo Cement, one of the largest Sri Lankan based manufacturers of cement, initiated the Quiz competition in 2013 to encourage the pursuit of knowledge through academic competitiveness. Annually the Company invests Rs.5.2 million as prize money in this mega corporate social responsibility initiative. The company also contributes towards support services for participating schools to ensure that children from any part of the country, rural or urban, are given an equal opportunity to participate and display their capabilities. Tokyo Cement and the Ministry of Education invites all 9,700 public schools in Sri Lanka, to enter the competition. Last year, a total of 532 schools participated in this mega competition and the current year is expected to garner an equal level of interest if not more.
As the competition progresses, each of the 16 schools that will exit during the first round of the competition will receive Rs. 100,000 each. The eight schools that will exit during the second round will receive Rs. 125,000 each, while the four schools to leave the competition during the third round, will receive Rs. 150,000 each. At the semi-finals that will see only four schools competing, the two teams that lose will be presented with Rs. 250, 000 each. The competition will conclude with the winning team walking away with the grand prize of Rs. 1 mn, while the first runner up will win a magnificent consolation prize of Rs 500,000. During the 2014 season, all members of the winning team, Richmond College, Galle were presented with HP laptops.
