Providing full degrees and a world class Australian education in Sri Lanka, Edith Cowan University (ECU) – Sri Lanka is among the premier academic institutions in the country. To foster an atmosphere of change and equip future leaders with the right skills to guide the nation out of its present circumstances, ECU – Sri Lanka hosted a corporate leadership seminar titled “The Need of the Hour: Exploring the roles and responsibilities of contemporary corporate leadership”, on the 27th of May 2022 at the Lavender Room of the BMICH in Colombo from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. The speakers at the event were Sriyan De Silva Wijeyeratne, Managing Director of the Hemas Consumer Business and a Director of the Hemas Group, and Kumudini Welmillage, Group HR Director at CBL Group. The forum was moderated by Dr Nuwan Wimalana, a Business Consultant, Corporate Director and Visiting Lecturer at ECU – Sri Lanka.
Discussing the initiative, David Mathews, General Manager at ECU – Sri Lanka said, “We believe in a student focussed and hands-on, practical approach to education, in order to equip students, not just with knowledge, but also with life and leadership skills. Industry-led sessions, where students can get insights from established corporate leaders, can add value to their academic pursuits and help them to emerge as strong leaders themselves. Thus, I take this opportunity to thank the speakers, guests and students for attending this seminar, and we look forward to many more such events in the future, as we prepare our students to take on demanding responsibilities and drive change in Sri Lanka.”
The seminar was actively attended by students of commerce at ECU – Sri Lanka, along with many distinguished corporate leaders and members of the faculty. The speakers provided great insights into the present state of the economy and Sri Lanka’s future prospects. Most notably, the need for intelligent, young and capable leaders for the future was stressed. Many vibrant discussions followed during the Q&A portion of the seminar, where members of the student body and the faculty raised interesting questions, which the speakers were pleased to answer.
Sarath Perera, Head of Marketing and Admissions at ECU – Sri Lanka added, “We’re very pleased to have been able to host such an event, where not just the students all in attendance were able to gain many insights on contemporary corporate leadership. It’s good for our students the future leaders to meet, talk and engage with corporate leaders, and it is also beneficial for corporate leaders to engage with students, as these students will be part of their cadres in the future.”
