IIT Campus felicitates winners of Microsoft Imagine Cup and Google Summer of Code
The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus) felicitated its students that won the Microsoft Imagine Cup and Google Summer of Code on May 27 at an event held at BMICH.
The felicitated students comprised of those in the seven teams representing the IIT Campus who set a new record by bagging the highest number of awards since the competitions inception in 2005 .They wona record six awards including the first place under the Games, Innovation and World Citizenship categories by defeating teams representing many prominent state universities and private higher education institutions. Two students from IIT Campus who were selected for the Google Summer of Code international annual programme werealso felicitated.
This has been the third consecutive year, that students from the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT Campus) emerged victors at the Imagine Cup Sri Lanka 2015 finals sponsored by Microsoft.
The winner for the Gamming category for Imagine Cup Sri Lanka 2015 was team DIMENSION-X SHOOTERS from IIT .The Innovation category was won by three teams from the IIT Campus that emerged winners, first runner-up and second runner-up. Team DRUTA were the winners of the Innovation category. The first runner-up in the Innovation category went to Firebird Sniff It, while team Shmoovi Equinox was adjudicated as the second runner-up.
The World Citizenship category was bagged by the team Firebird Twig-Gab that included MohamadShehan, MilindaJayalath, CharithaPerera and KrishnakripaJeyakumar taking the first place.
Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. This year 6,409 proposals were evaluated from students around the world and 1,051 students were accepted for Google Summer of Code 2015. IIT undergraduates RoshanElvitigala (Level 5 Software Engineering) andKasunGunasekara (Industrial Placement Software Engineering) have been accepted which will entail them with a handsome stipend.RoshanElvitigala has secured GSoC for the second time in succession.
The Microsoft Imagine Cup winners showcased their projects at the ceremony in the presence of parents, students, IIT Campus academics, industry leaders and ICT professionals.
The Chief Executive Officer for WSO2, Sanjiva Weerawarana addressed the gathering at the event and commended the winners on their achievements.
IIT Campus Chief Executive officer Dr. SampathKannangara said this award signified that the institute is continuing its tradition of being an award winning campus that produces well-rounded innovators. “Over the years IIT has evolved into an acclaimed institution which has produced over 3,000 graduates.IIT graduates are currently holding key positions in top corporate entities while many others are running their own successful businesses. The key foundation of IIT is to produce graduates who have the potential to become visionaries, innovators and business leaders” he said.
