Primrose School of English & Speech celebrates 40 years of excellence in English education
The Primrose School of English & Speech is marking 40 years of excellence in English education this year, buoyed by a consistent record of a 100% pass rate at examinations.
Ever since its founding in 1979 by Ms. Seethadevi Karunatilake, the Primrose School of English & Speech has been teaching English as a second language to students from across the region at several facilities around Kandy. The innovative and highly customized teaching methodologies which have been designed to help students achieve high proficiency in a short space of time, has enabled the school to achieve some of the highest credentials from the Department of Education. This has led to the institute’s popularity and success over four decades as Primrose progressively established a strong reputation among parents looking for ways to improve their children’s competency with the English language outside the school curriculum. Today, the institute stands as the largest and most progressive institute providing English and Speech (Elocution) education to students in Kandy and across the central province. The Institute employs over 20 qualified teachers who have been trained to deliver courses for children of all ages while devoting individual attention to each student.
In its 40 years of operation the school has sent over 16,000 students for Elocution, Written English, Spoken English and London Examinations – over 98% of whom have obtained distinctions. Students of the Primrose School of English & Speech have consistently excelled at these annual, internationally certified awards. Among other accolades, a total of 230 Primrose students have received awards for first place in the island-wide merit list.
2019 has been a particularly record-breaking year for the institute. Out of the 104 students who sat for the examinations, 100 have passed with ‘Honours,’ and 12 have emerged as all-island prize winners.
A wide range of subjects are taught at the institute, namely English, Elocution, Phonetics, Phonograms, Reading, Grammar, Spelling, Spoken English, Essay Writing, Comprehension, Letter Writing, Composition, Vocabulary, Good Manners, GCE O/L Exam papers, School English Text books, as well as training for Written, Elocution, and Spoken English Exams.
In accordance with each child’s requirement, the school offers preparation for either of the following forms of formal assessment: London exams from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), Written English and Spoken English exams from the Institute of Western Music and Speech Sri Lanka (IWMS). The IWMS is the highest professional body for English & Speech (Elocution) in Sri Lanka and has been incorporated by an Act of Parliament (No 44 of 1988). All certificates issued by this institute are internationally recognized. In addition students can opt to include the School English Book to improve results at school exams and enlist for Special Spoken English Classes as well.
“This year marks a significant milestone for us,” said Ms. Seethadevi Karunatilake, Founder and Principal of The Primrose School of English & Speech. “Our 40 year track record of maintaining consistently high standards in teaching, mentoring and training outlines our passion towards uplifting the standards of English Education across the central province.”
Ms. Nilupul Karunatilake, Director and Deputy Principal added: “Our reputation for delivering high-quality and customized English, Elocution, Speech and Drama programmes, in addition to the strong results we have achieved yet again, is indicative of our commitment towards facilitating greater opportunities for our students in education and employment.”
