Experience “The Land of the Rising Sun” at Waters Edge Japanese Fair
Waters Edge, the favourite suburban hotel on the outskirts of Colombo will once again stage its signature “Japanese Fair” on Friday 4th November 2016 from 5pm onwards at the Grand Lawn, Waters Edge. Organized together with the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the event will bring together the Japanese expat community and local enthusiasts to promote cultural awareness and community enriching.
The event will include many attractions from Japanese culture like delightful food stalls serving traditional Japanese delicacies, a variety of demonstrations and workshops like sushi making, origami (Japanese art of paper-folding), archery, aikido (ancient Japanese martial arts), ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangements), bonsai (Japanese art of growing trees in containers) and sumo wrestling. This year’s event will also feature special entertainment acts flown in from Japan to keep the crowds entertained throughout the evening.
“Fukazawagumi,” a traditional Japanese drum troupe, from the Fukazawa High School, one of Japan’s top level Taiko drumming schools, will demonstrate three traditional Japanese drumming styles at the festival. “Yakudo” or energetic and lively motion which starts with slow beats and accelerates crescendo toward the end, “Kansha” or drumming motions that displays respect for life and nature, and “Gokoku No Minori” or rich harvest which encourages Taiko drummers to imitate the process of harvesting will all be performed.
Meanwhile “Kikunokai,” a traditional Japanese dance troupe who have performed around the world will perform traditional dance forms such as Oyama Bayashi (dance where young men drag large floats), Yoru Ningyou Wa Yomigaeru (dance displaying a story of a doll coming to life at night), and Kasa Odori (a dance using large umbrellas, praying for rain fall to ensure a rich harvest).
Both internationally acclaimed troupes are being brought to Sri Lanka by the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Waters Edge being a culinary hub will use the expertise of its signature Japanese restaurant Ginza to put together an array of delectable Japanese dishes including Chicken Yakitori, Mix Kakiage Tempura, Vegetable Kakiage Tempura, Ebi (Prawn)Tempura, Harumaki (Vegetable Spring Rolls), Assorted Maki Sushi, and Assorted Sashimi. All food items will be reasonably priced for everyone to enjoy.The master chefs at the hotel will also serve up an amazing spread of non-Japanese food for those who prefer an eclectic mix of inter-continental food.
This entrance free event promises a fun filled evening for families and enthusiasts of Japanese food and culture. With the strength of a variety of Japanese associations including the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association, Ikebana International, Origami Folders Association, Budo Culture Research & Training Institute, Aikido Association and Ginza the Japanese Restaurant the event is bound to bring a unique experience to all participants.
