Faculty of Medicine, University of Ceylon’s Class of ‘63 celebrates Golden Jubilee at Sigiriya Jungles
The Class of ’63 of the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, University of Ceylon, celebrated its half century of being doctors at a memorable get-away at the Sigiriya Jungles Hotel recently.
Many doctors who were part of this batch, travelled from various parts of the world to commemorate their Golden Jubilee as doctors, while also having the opportunity to re-unite with their batch mates even for a brief period of time.
The event was spearheaded by an indefatigable Organising Committee comprised Dr. Deepamali Wimalasena, Dr. Shiranee Goonewardene, Dr. Gamini Walgampaya and Dr. Charith Seresinhe.
The countdown began over a year ago with the reservation of 42 rooms made as far back as in June 2017 with the doctors all eager to recapture fond memories of a bygone era and make new ones. The four day event was itself event-filled and included family members as well.
Celebrations kicked off from the moment they arrived at Sigiriya Jungles with specially organised activities such as games, sing-a-longs and dancing to the tunes of the DJ and the band.
A great sense of nostalgia permeated as the doctors reminisced about the lives of their colleagues who had passed on, but who were an integral part of the group. Anecdotes of each of them were shared by close friends as their pictures were projected onto the screen.
This landmark event was dotted with memorable moments as the organisers had diligently combed through the archives to retrieve a newspaper article about the 1963 Medical Faculty intake. The screening of their 25th anniversary reunion was also a time to revive another landmark celebration for the doctors. The culmination of the reunion was the lively concert, interspersed with games and other activities at the dinner dance which was enjoyed by all.
“While many of the 1963 Batch are actively continuing their medical practice, a few have retired, while some others continue to serve humanity through charity work and other community activities. For these doctors, this celebration was a much-needed respite from their busy schedules. It was also a fabulous opportunity to relive the golden years spent at the University with friends who share the same yearning and passion to serve others despite the years
