GSK webinar for doctors focuses on four case studies in adult asthma
Medical professionals in Sri Lanka had an opportunity to learn from case studies conducted by four renowned international specialists in adult asthma, via a live webcast of a medical seminar conducted recently by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK).
Titled ‘Coping is not Controlling,’ the web seminar or ‘webinar’ was the seventh such programme this year to which GSK provided Sri Lankan doctors access from their homes or clinics, as part of the company’s effort to disseminate information to a wider cross section of the medical fraternity.
Using the case studies of actual patients, the four specialists discussed the practical aspects and challenges of helping adult patients manage their asthma, and focussed on the impact of smoking on exacerbation of respiratory diseases.
“The number of Sri Lankan doctors that participated in this webinar was most heartening,” Dr Hector Weerasinghe, Medical Director of GSK Pharmaceuticals in Sri Lanka said. “The approach taken by the specialists that conducted the webinar was refreshingly practical and was informed by their extensive clinical experience.”
The first case study was of a patient with asthma currently prescribed a controller medication but still symptomatic, while the second concerned a patient with asthma who is poorly controlled and continues to smoke. A patient with asthma on controller therapy experiencing frequent exacerbations and a patient with asthma following a hospital admission for a life-threatening exacerbation were discussed in the third and fourth case studies.
GSK is a pioneer in respiratory medicine, and has been a leader in providing medical education to healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka and around the world. The live webinars conducted by the company are intended to reach a larger number of doctors, fulfilling the company’s mission of improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
