Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital Celebrates 100th Anniversary Emerges as 1st Hospital to Launch Commemorative Stamp
Joseph Fraser Hospital, a benchmark of excellence in women’s and children’s healthcare, recently celebrated a momentous milestone – its 100th anniversary. Established in 1923 by Mrs Chrissie Fraser in honour of her late husband, Mr Joseph Fraser, the hospital has remained dedicated to providing exceptional care to generations of women and their babies. The management of the hospital has since been taken over by the renowned leader in women’s and children’s healthcare in Sri Lanka, Ninewells Hospital, and continues to deliver outstanding care, in line with Joseph Fraser’s vision and 100-year legacy.
The hospital’s centenary anniversary was commemorated at a grand event attended by esteemed dignitaries and leaders of the community. The event took place under the patronage of H.E. the President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremasinghe.
One of the highlights of this historic celebration was the unveiling of a special commemorative stamp. This stamp not only pays tribute to the hospital’s rich legacy but also serves as a symbol of its enduring commitment to providing top-tier medical services to women and children, and makes it the 1st hospital in Sri Lanka to ever have a commemorative stamp issued. The hospital’s remarkable journey over the past century has garnered immense gratitude from the European population of Sri Lanka, a testament to the enduring impact of the Joseph Fraser family’s vision and dedication.
Speaking at the occasion, President Wickremesinghe expressed, “Indeed, I have resolved that Sri Lanka shall not merely remain a beneficiary of aid; instead, we aspire to evolve into a nation that contributes aid to others.” He then emphasized the nation’s commitment to supporting healthcare globally, exemplified by sending its doctors to the United Kingdom in collaboration with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. The President also likened his own role to that of a doctor saving a patient’s life, referring to his heavy task of economic and fiscal turnaround, and light-heartedly remarked, “If circumstances permitted, I would readily entrust my patient to the care of Joseph Fraser!” On a more serious note, the President outlined his government’s efforts to create a hybrid healthcare system, through public-private partnerships, including a potential national health insurance scheme.
Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital is renowned for its comprehensive range of services, including gynaecological and obstetric consultations, paediatrics, puberty and menopause support, and various other forms of specialized care for women and babies. Its reputation for delivering luxury services has made it the go-to choose for those seeking the highest standards of healthcare. The hospital’s prime location and inimitable atmosphere also make it the perfect place for welcoming new life into the world.
As the hospital embarks on its next century, the focus remains on world-class healthcare, remaining true to the Hospital’s century-long legacy. The hospital is now proudly a part of the Ninewells family, which emphasizes its commitment to delivering exceptional care in a nurturing and supportive environment.
